ÖBB warns of summer timetable changes as German track works disrupt Austria’s Weststrecke
Austria’s state rail operator ÖBB issued a detailed passenger advisory on 2 June confirming that extensive Deutsche Bahn engineering works between Passau and Regensburg will cascade into Austria’s long-distance network from 14 June to 12 December 2026. The closure forces Railjet, ICE and Nightjet services to divert via Munich, adding up to 30 minutes on Vienna–Innsbruck–Vorarlberg journeys and 15 minutes on Salzburg–Munich legs. Some 120 freight trains normally routed through Passau will now use alternative corridors, increasing congestion on the Salzburg–Wels section and triggering schedule shifts for regional services in Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg. During peak phases, certain InterCity trains will be withdrawn to preserve punctuality for commuters. ÖBB urged business travellers to build slack into meeting agendas and to verify itinerary changes in the SCOTTY mobile app or with corporate travel partners.

To ensure that revised schedules don’t derail cross-border paperwork, travellers can turn to VisaHQ for streamlined visa assistance. The platform’s Austria page (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) details Schengen requirements and can coordinate multi-country applications for those now transiting via Germany or Italy, letting passengers focus on timetables rather than travel documents.

Logistics firms were advised to consult Rail Cargo Group about rerouting options, including the Ennstal–Semmering line. The operator also flagged additional works in the Tyrolean Unterinntal (10 July–16 September) that will further stagger arrivals and departures at Innsbruck. While passengers face inconvenience, ÖBB framed the disruptions as an investment in the future: signalling upgrades and tunnel overhauls on both sides of the border are prerequisites for maximising capacity once the Brenner Base Tunnel opens later this decade. Advance notice, the carrier said, should allow companies to keep summer mobility plans on track.
