Government reshuffles Airport Authority board ahead of third-runway traffic surge
The Hong Kong SAR Government on 29 May 2026 confirmed four changes to the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) board, appointing lawmakers Holden Chow and Michael Wong together with businessman Eric Fok, and re-appointing accountant Stephen Yiu for three-year terms starting 1 June 2026. Three outgoing members—Rock Chen, Irene Chow and Dr William Wong—step down as the AA prepares for the full commissioning of its HK$141 billion Three-Runway System (3RS) later this year. The appointments bring a mix of political acumen and commercial network connections at a time when the AA is pivoting from construction delivery to operational ramp-up.

International companies planning increased travel to the expanded hub can streamline visa and documentation requirements through VisaHQ. The platform’s Hong Kong portal (https://www.visahq.com/hong-kong/) offers up-to-date guidance on entry rules, electronic travel authorizations and passport services, allowing travel departments to adapt quickly to any policy shifts that may accompany the airport’s new capacity.

The 3RS will raise Hong Kong International Airport’s capacity from 75 million to 120 million passengers annually, and from 5 to 10 million tonnes of cargo, restoring its pre-COVID status as one of the world’s busiest international hubs. For global mobility professionals, board composition matters: directors set aeronautical charge policies, decide on terminal concession models and steer digital-immigration initiatives such as biometric “seamless travel” corridors. Michael Wong, a former Development Secretary, is expected to champion land-side connectivity with the HK$34 billion Tuen Mun–Chek Lap Kok Link, while Eric Fok—vice-president of the Fok Ying Tung Group—could leverage Mainland partnerships to attract more Greater Bay Area feeder traffic. The Transport and Logistics Bureau emphasised continuity, noting that civil-aviation chief Simon Li remains an ex-officio AA board member. Airlines should nevertheless monitor upcoming consultations on slot allocation, baggage-handling automation and the relocation timetable for several temporary gates once third-runway parallel taxiways open. Travel managers may also see refreshed passenger-service charges as the AA moves to finance its expanded debt portfolio.
