Hong Kong International Airport’s Expanded Terminal 2 Sets New Benchmark for Departing Passengers
Published one day before live operations, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) confirmed that its rebuilt Terminal 2 (T2) departure complex would open on 27 May—its first major capacity addition since the third runway came online in 2022. The 300,000-square-metre facility houses eight check-in aisles, 68 self-bag-drop machines, 58 smart kiosks and—most relevant for mobility professionals—35 e-Channels equipped with facial-recognition gates that now admit travellers as young as seven.

Fifteen airlines will migrate their check-in desks from Terminal 1 to T2 in phases through 10 June, starting with Hong Kong Airlines. Departing passengers will complete documentation, security screening and immigration at T2 before boarding the Automated People Mover for a three-minute hop back to T1’s airside gates. All arrivals remain in T1 for baggage reclaim, minimising disruption to chauffeur pick-ups and cross-terminal transfers. Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) emphasises that the new set-up increases peak-hour departure processing capacity by 20 %, critical as HKIA targets 80 million annual passengers by 2028. For companies managing regional project teams, the change means shorter queue times and more predictable minimum-connection windows for onward ferries to Macau and the Pearl River Delta. The terminal also includes 15 smart-security lanes that allow laptops and 100 ml liquids to remain in bags—shaving minutes off screening. Ground-transport links have been retimed: 29 ‘A-Route’ airport buses and 17 overnight ‘NA-Route’ services now stop directly at T2, while ride-hailing pick-up is channelled to a dedicated kerb to avoid mixing with traditional taxis. Staff shuttle operators serving airline crews and logistics firms must update route permits by 30 June when the old T1 departure forecourt is partially closed for renovation. AAHK expects to open T2’s arrival halls next year once arrival traffic reaches 85 % of 2019 volumes. In the interim, mobility managers should brief business travellers: check-in at T2; clear immigration there; use the APM to gates; and reclaim bags at T1 on return. Early movers could gain a reputational edge by issuing updated travel-day instructions ahead of the summer conference rush.
