Hong Kong International Airport Completes Full-Scale Trial of New Terminal 2 Departure Complex
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) took a decisive step toward its largest capacity upgrade in a decade on 14 May 2026, running an end-to-end operational rehearsal of Terminal 2’s new departure facilities. More than 1,100 volunteers from 30 organisations—including the Airport Authority, three home-based carriers and multiple government departments—played the role of passengers to test every stage of the journey, from kerbside drop-off and self-bag-drop to e-Security Gates, automated immigration counters and e-boarding gates carried by the airport’s people-mover system. The four-hour drill allowed ground handlers, airlines and border-control officials to stress-test new technologies such as biometric-enabled self-bag-drop units and next-generation e-channels designed to process passports in under 20 seconds. Airport executives reported that the simulated passenger flow moved “smoothly”, with minor tweaks identified for signage placement and queuing algorithms. Terminal 2’s departure hall—shuttered since 2019 for expansion—will officially open on 27 May, enabling 15 airlines that mostly operate short-haul or regional routes to shift check-in operations from Terminal 1. The Airport Authority projects the new facility will handle roughly eight million passenger trips in its first year, raising HKIA’s overall capacity just in time for the summer peak.

For international visitors eager to make the most of that additional capacity, VisaHQ can streamline the visa application process before they even set foot in the new terminal. Through its Hong Kong portal (https://www.visahq.com/hong-kong/), the service helps travellers and corporate travel managers navigate country-specific entry rules, obtain e-visas, and ensure all documents are in order—ideal when last-minute regional hops or conference trips pop up thanks to HKIA’s expanded flight network.

For business travellers, the upgrade promises shorter connection times and a more seamless curb-to-gate experience, helped by 24 automated security lanes and facial-recognition boarding gates. Corporations with regional travel programmes are advised to update travel-policy guidance so employees know which airlines will move to T2 and where new kerbside drop-off points and lounge locations are. Travel-management companies also note that the additional capacity should improve on-time performance and make it easier to secure last-minute seats during conferences and trade fairs. The exercise underscores Hong Kong’s strategy to re-establish itself as Asia’s premier aviation hub after the pandemic. By investing heavily in passenger-processing technology and a third runway system, HKIA aims to accommodate 120 million travellers by 2030—cementing connectivity for the city’s multinational headquarters and expatriate community.
