OCI eligibility widened to 5th- & 6th-generation Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka
India has agreed to let fifth- and sixth-generation persons of Indian-origin Tamil (IOT) descent in Sri Lanka register for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status, lifting the previous fourth-generation cap . The Ministry of External Affairs announced the move on 20 April and reiterated the details in a 7 May Envoy Global alert. Applicants may now rely on Sri Lankan government lineage certificates, India–Sri Lanka passports issued to ancestors, or records held by the Indian High Commission in Colombo to prove eligibility . The change addresses a long-standing demand from the IOT community, whose ancestors were sent as indentured workers to Ceylon’s tea estates in the 19th and early 20th centuries. For mobility practitioners the expansion is significant: OCI status confers life-long, multi-entry visa-free travel to India and the right to work, making it easier for descendants to take up assignments with Indian multinationals or family businesses.

For those looking for hands-on help with the new OCI process, VisaHQ provides an end-to-end service via its dedicated India portal (https://www.visahq.com/india/). The platform guides applicants through lineage documentation, form completion and appointment scheduling, while allowing corporate mobility teams to track multiple cases in real time and ensure full compliance.

It also simplifies travel for medical care, education and cross-border supply-chain roles between Chennai and Colombo. Corporates hiring Sri-Lankan nationals of Indian origin should update on-boarding checklists to capture the new OCI option, which may in some cases be quicker and cheaper than applying for an employment visa. Processing times remain at four to six weeks once documentation is complete.
