Qantas to Retire Final Domestic A380s on Sydney–Perth Route
Qantas confirmed on 30 April 2026 that its last remaining Airbus A380 domestic service—three weekly rotations between Sydney and Perth—will cease on 26 October. The super-jumbos, introduced on the five-hour trans-continental hop in 2024 during 787 maintenance delays, will be swapped for Boeing 787-9s and Airbus A330-200s. While total weekly frequencies stay at 21, capacity falls sharply: each A380 carried 64 business-class seats and 14 first-class suites, versus 42 business seats on the 787 and 36 on the A330. Corporate travel managers should therefore brace for tighter premium inventory and potentially higher fares in Australia’s busiest corporate corridor, which moves more than four million passengers annually. Qantas says redeploying fuel-efficient Dreamliners to international sectors will cut operating costs and free super-long-range jets for new Asia services. For companies redirecting staff through unfamiliar international hubs, keeping on top of shifting entry rules can be as challenging as finding premium seats. VisaHQ’s Australia portal (https://www.visahq.com/australia/) simplifies visa procurement with real-time requirements, digital applications and bulk-management tools, helping travel coordinators secure essential travel documents quickly and keep itineraries on schedule. The move also ends an aviation curiosity: at 3,291 kilometres, Sydney–Perth was the world’s longest domestic A380 route. Affected customers will be automatically re-accommodated, but organisations with negotiated A380 cabin-class benefits—such as first-class upgrades—may need to amend travel policies. Travel approvers should also note that Virgin Australia retains a steadier business-class offering on rival A330 flights, which could become a key overflow option during peak mining conference periods. In the medium term, reduced wide-body capacity strengthens the case for a true Western Australia hub. Perth Airport is courting Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific for additional connections that could ease reliance on Sydney for Europe-bound itineraries, partially offsetting Qantas’ cutbacks.
