Australia Visa Policy

The Australian Migration Act 1958 & The Migration Regulations is the foundational law that regulates the immigration policy of the government.

The Australian Migration Act 1958 & The Migration Regulations is the foundational law that regulates the immigration policy of the government. This law is administered by the Department of Home Affairs, which also executes the government’s visa policy. Australia has maintained a visa regime for all visitors, which means that every noncitizen of Australia is required by law to hold a visa bridge so they can enter the country. The visa is issued after they have submitted an application or are granted one by law. The application process for foreign nationals is not cast in stone but varies from nationality to nationality.

In the case of New Zealand, their citizens may apply for a special category visa called a Subclass 444 visa on arrival, which is, according to the joint Trans – Tasman Travel Arrangements, and this application attracts no application fee. Currently, nationals from 36 countries which comprise 27 EU states, 4 EFTA states, 4 European Microstates, and the United Kingdom, may apply for an eVisitor Subclass 652 visa online.

There is also the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) available to nationals of 34 countries which is also available online.

Important Information For Applicants

To avail an Australian ETA or eVisitor permit, here are some vital details to bear in mind.

Clean Record: Only persons with clean criminal records or those who don’t have a court sentence hanging over their heads will be issued any of that online travel authorization. To prove your record, you must submit a police clearance report or any suitable document to that effect. This is not mandatory for all visitors, only persons from selected countries.

Cover Letter: The cover letter explaining why you have decided to come to Australia has to clearly state the purpose of the trip, the places you plan to visit, the arrival and departure date, your host, and any other relevant information. Also, cover letters must be signed by the applicant.

Application Fee: Kindly note that the application fee is solely for processing your visa application and is not a guarantee that the visa will be issued to you. Also note that the fee cannot be refunded once it is paid regardless of whether you get the visa or not. Application fees are paid with credit or debit cards.

Don’t Overstay: Never overstay your welcome beyond the expiry date of your entry document. This is a grave immigration offense, and if you are caught, you will be sanctioned for fine payments and deportation and banned from future visits.

Health Requirements: Health requirements vary from person to person depending on the region they are visiting from. The Australian Ministry of Health regularly releases updates about health requirements based on regions so before leaving your country check for updates for visitors coming from your region.

Be Mindful Of Your Luggage: The Australian authorities are very strict when it comes to traveler's luggage.  Items like food, plants, pets and agricultural materials that may pose a risk to the ecosystem are not accepted into the country.  Check the list of prohibited items to know what you can and cannot bring into Australia.

Travel With A Copy: Make sure you bring a copy of your e visitor visa or ETA along for the trip. The border agents may request your copy to verify your identity.  Moreover, you may need it should there be a need to prove that you are intj country legally when you are in public spaces.

Approved Routes: Always enter Australia through approved routes. Even if you have a valid ETA or e Visitor visa you must not enter through illegal entry points. Before booking your ticket check for the airport the carrier will land as not all airports in Australia are open to International travelers.
