Australia and Canada Sign Open Skies Pact, Unlocking Unlimited Flights
Australia and Canada quietly rewrote the rule-book on 30 April 2026, signing an "open skies" air-services agreement that abolishes decades-old capacity caps between the two countries.

Under the previous bilateral, Qantas was effectively limited to a single daily Sydney–Vancouver Boeing 787 flight, while Air Canada split its entitlement across Sydney and Brisbane.

The new deal removes all government-imposed frequency and seat limits, giving airlines the same commercial freedom enjoyed on trans-Tasman routes.

For Qantas, the timing is perfect. The flag-carrier has 12 additional 787-9s arriving from late-2026 and has long eyed Toronto and Montreal as future gateways.

Executives told analysts the carrier can now “grow North America without touching the joint-venture with American Airlines,” hinting at seasonal services that could connect seamlessly with OneWorld and WestJet domestic networks.

Jetstar, which also operates the Dreamliner, gains identical rights, raising the prospect of a low-cost leisure play during Canada’s ski season.

Before booking opens, travellers will need to check that their paperwork is equally agile. VisaHQ’s self-service portal (https://www.visahq.com/australia/) can process Canadian eTAs for tourists or arrange expedited work visas for assignees, giving corporates and holiday-makers a one-stop shop that complements the new air-access freedoms.

Travel buyers should prepare for meaningful competition. Removing capacity ceilings typically forces down peak-season fares, widens award-seat inventory and improves schedule choice for corporate programmes.

Procurement teams with Canadian exposure may want to renegotiate long-haul contracts as additional frequencies come online.

Policy-makers see wider benefits. Canada is an increasingly important source of skilled workers for Australia’s technology and mining sectors, while Australian firms are expanding in Vancouver’s clean-tech corridor.

More flights and easier freight carriage will support that talent and trade flow.

Immigration lawyers note that the agreement dovetails with Ottawa’s fast-track Global Skills Strategy and Canberra’s own March visa-processing overhaul, further reducing friction for mobile employees.

In short, the pact marks the most significant expansion of Australia–Canada air rights since services began in 1984.

Business travellers should expect more seats, broader routing options and sharper prices as airlines move quickly to exploit their new freedom.
