ANAC opens two public consultations on aircraft maintenance reliability and engine-trend monitoring
In a notice issued at 19:00 on 25 April 2026, Brazil’s Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) invited operators, MROs and aviation professionals to comment on two draft Instructions that could reshape maintenance planning. The first, proposed IS 120-017A, details statistical reliability programmes that allow airlines to extend—or shorten—maintenance intervals based on real-world performance data rather than rigid hourly limits. The second, IS 91.409-002A, introduces guidance on trend monitoring to prevent power-loss accidents in piston-engine aircraft. While policymakers fine-tune these aviation rules, international consultants and crews traveling to Brazil for stakeholder meetings should remember that VisaHQ streamlines the entry paperwork. Our online portal (https://www.visahq.com/brazil/) lets corporate travelers, technicians and auditors secure the correct Brazilian visa or ETA in just a few clicks, ensuring that compliance discussions aren’t delayed by documentation hassles. If adopted, the reliability-based methodology would bring Brazil in line with FAA and EASA practices, giving domestic carriers the flexibility to optimise heavy-check schedules and reduce aircraft downtime. Business-aviation operators could also benefit by aligning their Part 135-equivalent manuals with data analytics they already use for predictive maintenance. The consultations remain open on ANAC’s website until 4 December 2026. Industry associations such as ABAG have urged members to submit evidence showing cost savings and safety gains from similar programmes abroad. Final texts are expected in the first quarter of 2027 and, once published, will be incorporated into operator maintenance manuals within six months. Mobility impact is indirect but relevant: more efficient maintenance cycles can reduce unscheduled cancellations and improve schedule reliability for corporate flyers. Less overnight downtime also allows airlines to add early-morning frequencies out of São Paulo and Rio, markets where business demand is highest.
