Brussels Tells Austria and Eight Others to Phase Out Internal Schengen Checks Affecting Czech Border
The European Commission on 3 June 2026 issued a rare public warning to nine Schengen states—including Austria, Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia and Sweden—over the prolonged use of internal border controls. The notice highlights Austria’s land and river checks with Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia, which have been repeatedly renewed since 2015 and are currently authorised until 15 June 2026. While EU law does allow temporary re-introduction of controls in response to serious security threats, Brussels said the measures must remain “exceptional, proportionate and strictly time-limited”. The Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs urged governments to scale back in favour of mobile police patrols, vehicle-tracking technology and biometric spot-checks. Slovenia, for example, has just extended controls on its Croatian and Hungarian borders until December 2026, citing organised crime and terrorism, but is now under pressure to outline an exit strategy. For Czech exporters and logistics firms, the spotlight on Austria is significant. The Austrian-Czech truck corridor carries roughly a quarter of Czechia’s road freight to Western Europe; even short inspection stops can erode driving-time margins under EU tachograph rules. Mobility managers report that some drivers now build a 45-minute buffer into Vienna–Brno routes to absorb random checks. If the Commission’s push succeeds, those buffers—and the related overtime costs—could shrink in the second half of 2026. Tourism stakeholders are also watching closely. Prague’s inbound operators say Austrian coach companies have been hesitant to schedule late-night arrivals because of unpredictable wait times at crossings such as Mikulov/Drasenhofen.

A clear timetable for lifting controls would help firms sell combined Vienna–Prague packages more confidently during the high-season window from July to September. Next steps will depend on political will. Commission officials hinted that continued non-compliance could trigger infringement proceedings—a process that can end in fines by the European Court of Justice. Vienna maintains that human-smuggling networks along the Western Balkan route justify the checks, but it has promised to review data “in light of the Commission’s request”. Czech diplomats told Trans.Info they expect “quiet technical talks” in Brussels next week.
