Spain issues 2026 guidance on renewing the Digital Nomad visa (ARTIN): higher income threshold and 20 % Spanish-income cap
Barcelona-based advisory BMC has published the first comprehensive renewal guide for Spain’s Digital Nomad residence permit, officially the ARTIN, as thousands of remote workers approach the end of their initial three-year authorisation granted under the 2023 Start-ups Law. Released on 26 May, the guide confirms that applicants must now evidence a minimum monthly income of €2,442—200 % of the 2026 minimum wage (SMI)—and prove that no more than 20 % of earnings over the past year came from Spanish sources.

Need help navigating the ARTIN renewal or any other Spanish visa formalities? VisaHQ’s dedicated Spain portal (https://www.visahq.com/spain/) streamlines document gathering, appointment scheduling and real-time status tracking for digital nomads, their families and corporate mobility teams, making compliance quicker and less stressful.

Renewal dossiers can be filed from 60 days before permit expiry to 90 days after. Late submissions within that 90-day grace period incur a 25 % fee surcharge but maintain legal status while pending. Holders with more than 30 % domestic income risk refusal unless they switch to a standard residence-and-work permit. BMC warns that many freelancers who started picking up Spanish clients during their first years in-country may inadvertently breach the 20 % cap and should audit invoices well in advance. New documentary requirements include 12 months of bank statements, a detailed income-source declaration and updated AEAT (tax agency) and TGSS (Social Security) compliance certificates. Health insurance must remain in force, and self-employed workers must show no arrears. Remote employees on the Beckham tax regime must attach Form 150 to demonstrate fiscal alignment. For global-mobility teams the guidance clarifies several grey areas. Family members renew concurrently but each adds 75 % of the SMI to the income bar. The two-year renewal extends the total ARTIN validity to five years, after which holders may transition to EU long-term residence. Employers of record (EoR) services remain acceptable, provided the contractual employer is non-Spanish. With Spain aiming to attract 15,000 digital nomads annually, consistent renewal rules are critical. Companies hosting remote-first staff in Spain should update policy checklists, remind talent of the Spanish-income ceiling and schedule compliance reviews at least six months before each renewal window.
