New NSW Migrant Workers Centre Opens to Combat Exploitation of Temporary-Visa Holders
The New South Wales government has launched the state’s first dedicated Migrant Workers Centre, pledging AU $6.5 million over four years to help temporary-visa holders who face underpayment, unsafe conditions or visa-linked coercion in the workplace. Opened in Sydney’s CBD on 23 May, the centre is a partnership between the NSW Department of Industrial Relations and Unions NSW. It will provide hotline advice, case management, legal referrals and targeted outreach to regional areas where seasonal and hospitality labour demand is high.

If migrants or their employers need help navigating the visa process, VisaHQ’s Australia portal (https://www.visahq.com/australia/) provides clear checklists, real-time application tracking and expert support—services that can reduce administrative stress and let workers focus on asserting their rights through initiatives like the new centre.

Research by the Migrant Justice Institute shows that almost two-thirds of migrant workers have experienced wage theft, with international students losing an estimated AU $60 million in unpaid wages every week. The vulnerability is compounded for workers whose visas are tied to a single employer—common in the hospitality, construction and agricultural sectors—because reporting abuse can jeopardise their lawful status. NSW Premier Chris Minns said the centre “sends a signal that exploitation is unacceptable and that migrants contribute vitally to our economy.” Businesses that sponsor foreign nationals must already meet training, salary and Fair Work obligations; failure to comply can lead to civil penalties, license suspension and exclusion from future sponsorship. For global mobility managers, the initiative provides a new escalation pathway when secondees or sponsored staff encounter workplace disputes. Companies should brief assignees on the service and ensure internal grievance channels align with Australian whistle-blower protections to minimise legal exposure and reputational risk.
