Arora Group pitches phased ‘Heathrow West’ plan to fast-track third-runway capacity
UK hospitality and property conglomerate Arora Group has unveiled fresh details of its privately funded Heathrow West expansion proposal, arguing that a modular approach could deliver extra runway capacity years earlier—and at lower cost—than Heathrow Airport Ltd’s own master-plan. The updated concept, published on 18 May, envisages a new 2,400-metre runway and Terminal 6 on land to the west of existing Terminal 5, with later extension to full length once demand and financing align. By separating construction into phases, Heathrow West Limited (HWL) says it can avoid relocating the M25 motorway in the initial build, cut early capital outlay and bring forward opening to 2035. Terminal 6 would initially handle up to 40 million passengers a year—roughly the combined throughput of Gatwick and Luton today—while preserving surrounding Green-Belt land. The design team includes engineering giant Bechtel, and the consortium plans to submit a Development Consent Order in late 2027 following public consultation. Airline stakeholders have responded positively: International Airlines Group CEO Luis Gallego called the blueprint “credible”, while Virgin Atlantic and IATA head Willie Walsh praised its lower-cost, passenger-friendly ethos. Arora Group founder Surinder Arora urged the government and the Civil Aviation Authority to establish a formal framework to compare rival schemes on common assumptions and independent cost scrutiny. For global mobility managers, additional Heathrow capacity would relieve slot scarcity that currently drives up fares, constrains route development and undermines the UK’s attractiveness for regional HQ functions.

For companies anticipating the uptick in UK-bound travel that an expanded Heathrow would bring, VisaHQ can streamline journeys by handling visa and travel-document requirements for staff, contractors and visiting clients. Its online platform, https://www.visahq.com/united-kingdom/ provides fast eligibility checks, live status tracking and expert guidance, keeping itineraries on schedule and helping organisations avoid costly immigration snags.

A phased runway also spreads construction-related disruption over time, potentially reducing years of flight-schedule turbulence. Nonetheless, the proposal must still navigate a labyrinth of planning, environmental and community objections—and compete against Heathrow’s own £49 billion third-runway plan. If HWL secures approval, corporate travel buyers could see expanded peak-hour slot availability and a broader mix of long-haul carriers around the mid-2030s, supporting more flexible assignment policies and cost-effective routing via the UK hub.
