Poland marks 35 years of the Border Guard with pledge to keep upgrading EU’s eastern frontier
Lublin’s historic Castle Square turned green on 16 May 2026 as officers in distinctive olive-and-black uniforms paraded in front of President Karol Nawrocki, Interior State Secretary Czesław Mroczek and hundreds of invited guests. The ceremony officially opened the 35th anniversary celebrations of Straż Graniczna – the Polish Border Guard – which replaced the communist-era WOP on 16 May 1991. In speeches, commanders underlined how the service has evolved from a lightly equipped post-Cold-War formation into a 20,000-strong, technology-driven agency that now oversees more than 3,500 km of frontier, including 1,600 km that double as the European Union’s external border.

Major procurements in the past five years include an 186-kilometre electronic barrier on the Belarus line, long-range drones for the Baltic coast and mobile biometric kiosks that interface with the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES).

According to acting chief Brig-Gen. Tomasz Praga, the Guard has doubled its technical-surveillance budget since 2022 and will add another PLN 400 million (€90 million) for AI-assisted analytics over the next two fiscal years.

Beyond hardware, officials stressed the growing emphasis on inter-agency and cross-border collaboration. Straż Graniczna officers now sit in joint investigation teams with Europol, Frontex and neighbouring services, while the force’s language school in Koszalin trains specialists in Ukrainian, Russian and Arabic to speed up frontline interviews.

For companies and individual travellers trying to keep pace with these dynamic border controls, VisaHQ offers a convenient way to verify current entry rules and secure the necessary documentation online; its Poland portal (https://www.visahq.com/poland/) provides real-time visa guidance, digital application tools and corporate account options tailored to frequent cross-border moves.

“Protection and facilitation must go hand in hand,” President Nawrocki said, arguing that secure borders are a pre-condition for Poland’s booming trade and record inbound investment.

For mobility managers the message was clear: Poland intends to keep border security high on the political agenda. Companies sending staff or equipment across Polish frontiers – particularly the external EU borders with Belarus and Ukraine – should expect continued use of high-tech scanning, on-the-spot biometric checks and random secondary inspections, even for EU nationals.

At the same time, the Guard’s new Traveller Service Portal, due to launch this summer, promises real-time queue forecasts and a fast-track booking module for accredited corporate shuttle operators.

Analysts note that the anniversary arrives at a sensitive moment for Schengen. Multiple member states, including Germany and Sweden, have re-introduced internal checks, raising fears of a fragmented travel area. Warsaw’s answer, officials insist, is to make external control so effective that internal controls become unnecessary – a stance likely to keep Poland in the spotlight of European mobility debates for the foreseeable future.
