Data show Europe’s new biometric border system is adding up to two-hour queues for US travellers
Travel-analytics firm QSensor analysed automated-gate data at 11 major European airports two weeks after the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) went live on 10 April and published its findings on 26 April. The study found average passport-control wait times rose 25–30 percent at Amsterdam, Zurich and Milan, with peak delays hitting 120 minutes when multiple long-haul flights arrive simultaneously. Frankfurt was the outlier, shaving a minute off its average but still recording 120-minute spikes. EES replaces manual stamping with fingerprint and facial-image capture for all third-country nationals—including the 15 million Americans who visit Europe annually.

For American travellers navigating these new requirements, VisaHQ can streamline the pre-travel admin. The platform’s U.S. portal (https://www.visahq.com/united-states/) offers step-by-step guidance on EES enrolment, Schengen visa rules, and passport-validity checks, helping both leisure and corporate clients avoid last-minute surprises.

Airlines and airports say the early bottlenecks stem from first-time enrolments that take 60–90 seconds per passenger. The European Commission insists queues will normalise once most frequent travellers are enrolled, but has urged carriers to advise US passengers to download the ‘Travel to Europe’ pre-registration app and build four-hour buffers into summer itineraries. For corporate travel managers the data translate into hard costs: missed rail and connecting-flight segments and additional duty-of-care exposure for travellers stranded in non-Schengen transit zones. Best practices include blocking 3-hour minimum connections at hub gateways, instructing assignees to pre-enrol biometrics, and leveraging fast-track agreements where available.
