Swissport wins Geneva ground-handling concession through 2030, secures 1,100 local jobs
In a significant boost to Switzerland’s aviation services sector, Swissport International announced on 26 April 2026 that it has won Geneva Airport’s competitive tender to provide passenger and ramp services until 2030. The concession renewal cements Swissport’s 26-year presence at the airport, where it already handles about 70 percent of carriers operating into Geneva-Cointrin.

Whether you’re an airline executive shuttling between hubs or a corporate traveller heading to Geneva for high-stakes meetings, ensuring seamless visa arrangements is just as critical as reliable ground handling. VisaHQ’s Switzerland portal (https://www.visahq.com/switzerland/) equips travellers and mobility planners with an easy way to verify entry requirements, submit visa applications online and monitor their status in real time, helping to keep itineraries on track no matter how busy Geneva Airport becomes.

Under the new agreement the ground-handler’s 1,100 local employees will continue to manage check-in, baggage, cargo and de-icing operations for some 46,000 flights and 5.5 million passengers a year. Swissport says the contract allows it to accelerate its ESG roadmap, committing to raise the share of electric ground vehicles at Geneva from 47 percent today to 55 percent by 2032. For corporate mobility planners the concession guarantees operational continuity at Western Switzerland’s key business gateway, underpinning schedule reliability for organisations with headquarters around Lake Geneva. It also provides ground for potential service upgrades; Swissport plans to trial biometric baggage-drop units and AI-based turnaround management software in Geneva before rolling them out to Basel and Zurich. The award comes amid intense competition after Geneva opened the licence to five bidders in 2022. Winning reinforces Swissport’s standing as a preferred partner for airlines grappling with post-pandemic labour shortages and new EES processing demands at the border. The company handled 186 million passengers and 4.8 million tonnes of cargo worldwide in 2025, making the Geneva deal a relatively small but strategically important piece of its European portfolio.
