Hong Kong International Airport’s New Terminal 2 Begins Operations, 15 Airlines Shifting Check-in Counters
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) switched on the departures facilities of its rebuilt Terminal 2 (T2) on 27 May and, as of 2 June 2026, the phased airline migration is in full swing. Hong Kong Airlines processed 36 outbound flights on opening day and will be joined by 14 other mostly short-haul carriers—including AirAsia, IndiGo, VietJet, Cebu Pacific and Greater Bay Airlines—by 10 June.

If you’re planning to take advantage of the expanded flight options, VisaHQ can help streamline any necessary travel paperwork. Through its user-friendly portal (https://www.visahq.com/hong-kong/), you can check requirements, complete visa applications online and receive real-time status alerts, all of which makes navigating HKIA’s new, speed-focused processes even smoother.

Long-haul and premium carriers such as Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines remain in Terminal 1, but the shuffle frees up valuable counter space ahead of the busy summer peak. The redesigned 300,000 m² facility currently handles check-in, security and immigration only; passengers ride the driverless Automated People Mover to their boarding gates in T1. T2 offers 160 conventional counters, 48 self-bag-drop machines, and biometric e-Security Gates that promise sub-seven-second facial-recognition clearance. Passengers may keep laptops and liquids under 100 ml in their bags, trimming wait times by an estimated 25 percent. Retail has opened with round-the-clock dining and a direct connection to the Airport Express and coach station, while a 1,000-space car park sits above the terminal. Airport Authority Hong Kong says the T2 concourse—slated for 2027—will add 27 gates and let T2 operate arrivals and departures independently. The three-runway system, of which T2 is a centrepiece, is projected to boost HKIA’s capacity to 120 million passengers a year. For corporate travel managers the improvement means shorter queues, greater flight choice and a clearer separation of premium and low-cost traffic. Multinationals basing regional teams in Hong Kong will gain capacity headroom for rotational assignees and equipment shipments, while the biometric gates align HKIA with other leading Asian hubs that have introduced seamless-travel technology. Travellers are advised to verify their airline’s check-in location and allow extra transfer time during the transition period.
