Switzerland Re-introduces Border Checks With France Ahead of June G7 Summit in Évian
Travellers who routinely drive, sail or take the train across the Franco-Swiss frontier around Lake Geneva will face systematic passport inspections for nine days next month. In a notification published on 27 May 2026, the Swiss Federal Council announced that it will temporarily suspend Schengen-area free-movement rules from 10 to 19 June to secure the Group of Seven leaders’ summit taking place in Évian-les-Bains, France, from 15 to 17 June. Although Switzerland is only the host of the security perimeter—police and cyber-defence headquarters for the summit will be in Lausanne—the meeting venue sits just 12 km from the Swiss shore. The authorities therefore argue that potential demonstrations, VIP arrivals and “unpredictable threats” could just as easily originate on their side of the lake. Checks will apply on all road and rail crossings with France as well as to pleasure craft and ferries on Lake Geneva. Commercial freight will be channelled through designated lanes, but drivers should still expect spot searches and longer waiting times. The decision is part of a broader uptick in intra-Schengen controls. The same 27 May notice from border-logistics portal Trans.info confirmed that the Netherlands and Italy have both extended their own internal checks until at least the autumn, citing irregular migration and terrorism risks. While those measures have limited impact on France directly, they signal a more fragmented travel landscape that companies moving staff around Europe can no longer ignore.

Travellers and corporate mobility teams who need additional support with passport validity checks or last-minute visa requirements can turn to VisaHQ’s France portal (https://www.visahq.com/france/). The platform streamlines applications, offers real-time status updates and provides expert guidance on documentation—an especially useful resource when temporary border measures like these introduce extra layers of complexity.

For global-mobility managers the message is clear: build extra buffer time into itineraries through Geneva and nearby French regions such as Haute-Savoie; remind employees to carry passports even on what look like routine intra-EU trips; and monitor freight forwarders for possible driver-hour overruns. Smaller cross-border suppliers—IT contractors based in Lausanne servicing clients in Annecy, for example—may wish to apply for the French Police aux Frontières’ dedicated G7 fast-track passes (currently limited to vetted logistics and media staff). As has been the case with previous summits, the controls are expected to lift at 00:00 on 20 June, but Swiss police have retained the option to prolong them if intelligence warrants it.
