Canada Expands eTA Eligibility to Indonesia and Malaysia, Easing Business and Leisure Travel

Canada Expands eTA Eligibility to Indonesia and Malaysia, Easing Business and Leisure Travel
In a move that underscores Ottawa’s broader Indo-Pacific strategy, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirmed on 25 May 2026 that certain citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia will no longer need a short-stay visitor visa when arriving in Canada by air. Instead, eligible travellers can apply online for an electronic travel authorization (eTA) that costs CAD $7 and is normally approved within minutes. The change applies only to Indonesian and Malaysian nationals who (1) have held a Canadian temporary resident visa in the past 10 years or (2) currently hold a valid U.S. non-immigrant visa. All other citizens of the two countries—and anyone entering Canada by land or sea—must still obtain a standard visitor visa. The government argues that these applicants are already “known travellers,” having completed biometric and security screening either by Canada or by the United States. Officials link the policy to Canada’s effort to deepen commercial ties with fast-growing Southeast Asian markets.

Both Indonesia and Malaysia feature prominently in Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy as priority partners for trade diversification, foreign direct investment and talent mobility. By removing a key administrative hurdle, Ottawa expects to spur short-term business travel, tourism and academic collaboration, while maintaining border security through the eTA’s advance-screening process. For Canadian companies, the streamlined process should make it easier to bring in prospective clients, suppliers and conference delegates from Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and beyond. Airlines are also likely to benefit from higher point-to-point demand, especially on existing trans-Pacific services that feed into Canadian hubs. Travellers, meanwhile, gain cost and time advantages: an eTA is roughly one-tenth the price of a visitor visa and avoids lengthy paper-based processing. IRCC stresses that the reform takes effect at 05:30 EDT on 26 May 2026. Employers and travel managers should therefore audit any imminent trips from Indonesia or Malaysia to ensure the correct documentation is in place. The department also signals that additional visa-policy tweaks aimed at key Indo-Pacific partners may follow later this year, suggesting a gradual shift toward risk-based facilitation to keep Canada competitive for talent and investment.
