Cyprus rolls out pilot online system for renewing residence permits
The Civil Registry and Migration Department (CRMD) has quietly taken a decisive digital step: as of 22 May 2026, foreign residents can renew several categories of residence permits entirely online. The new portal—initially available in Greek and English—covers the renewal of permits for (a) family members of employees of companies of foreign interest and (b) long-term residents admitted under family-reunification rules. Applicants upload supporting documents, pay fees by card, and receive automatic confirmation; renewed cards are then collected by appointment or delivered by courier. Behind the move is an ambitious wider programme to digitise 80 % of CRMD’s frontline services by 2027. Until now, companies relocating staff to Cyprus have had to dispatch HR representatives or immigration agents to the Nicosia headquarters, queue for hours, and deliver thick paper files. The new service eliminates in-person filing for more than 12 000 renewals a year, slashing processing time from eight weeks to an estimated three. A built-in validation engine rejects scans that are blurred or that do not correspond to the applicant’s ID number, reducing clerical errors that often stalled previous renewals.

Applicants who would like additional guidance during the online renewal process can enlist the support of VisaHQ; the company’s Cyprus team (https://www.visahq.com/cyprus/) reviews uploaded documents, advises on CRMD requirements, and even arranges secure courier delivery of renewed cards, offering peace of mind to both individual applicants and busy corporate HR departments.

For multinationals, the benefits are immediate. Employees who travel frequently will no longer risk overstaying an expiring card because original passports remained at CRMD for weeks. HR teams can track each stage of the renewal online and download official filing receipts to prove legal status during business trips. The Ministry of Interior says the pilot will expand in September to cover first-time permits for foreign-interest companies and digital-nomad visas, followed by investor-residence categories by early 2027. Immigration lawyers welcome the development but warn of transition hurdles. “Companies must review their data-protection policies. The portal requires uploading salary slips and tenancy contracts; those contain personal data that should not be passed to third parties without consent,” notes Maria Andreou, Partner at GlobalReach Legal. She adds that original apostilled documents still need to be kept on file in case of random audits. Practically, foreign employees should create individual accounts early, prepare high-resolution scans (PDF or JPEG, max 4 MB each), and ensure medical-insurance certificates include all family members. The CRMD has published a 12-page user guide and opened a dedicated helpline (+357 22 40 39 00) for technical issues. If the pilot proves successful, Cyprus will join Estonia, Ireland and Portugal in offering fully digital renewals—further enhancing its appeal as a regional headquarters hub.
