Hong Kong Airlines to launch weekly Lanzhou service, deepening Belt-and-Road connectivity
Hong Kong Airlines (HX) will inaugurate a once-weekly non-stop flight between Hong Kong and Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province, on 26 May 2026. The announcement, carried in Asian Aviation’s news-in-brief on 18 May, gives the carrier its first foothold in north-west China’s fast-growing logistics and energy corridor and widens travel options for firms operating along the Belt and Road. Lanzhou sits on the traditional Silk Road and today serves as a key rail and road hub linking Central Asia, the Middle East and Europe. For Hong Kong-based companies in engineering, renewable energy and agritech that have project sites in the region, the new direct service cuts typical journey times by four to six hours compared with routing via Xi’an or Beijing.

The flight will initially operate every Sunday using an Airbus A320neo configured with 8 Business and 156 Economy seats. Hong Kong Airlines says frequencies could rise to three weekly rotations by the winter schedule if loads justify the expansion. Cargo capacity—around two tonnes per flight—will be marketed to e-commerce merchants shipping high-value perishables and machinery spare parts into the Greater Bay Area. The route also has talent-mobility implications. Under Beijing’s Western Development strategy, Lanzhou is home to several petrochemical and aerospace R&D parks employing expatriate engineers on rotational assignments. Direct air links make it easier to issue Hong Kong-sponsored employment visas and arrange rapid mid-contract travel for technical teams. Travel buyers should note that Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport is 70 kilometres from the city centre; HX will offer through-checked baggage and intermodal rail tickets into downtown as part of a promotional bundle for corporate accounts signing up before end-June.
