Austrian Airlines bolsters staffing and fuel security ahead of record summer surge
National flag-carrier Austrian Airlines (OS) said on 6 May 2026 that it is “well prepared” for what is expected to be the busiest summer in its 67-year history, thanks to an unexpectedly stable jet-fuel supply and the deployment of 120 additional seasonal staff at Vienna-Schwechat Airport. The update follows an Economica Institute study showing that every additional million passengers at Vienna generates €75 million in economic output and up to 950 jobs. Chief Operations Officer Francesco Sciortino told reporters the airline has secured 100 percent of its kerosene requirement through September despite tight European refinery capacity. Contingency contracts with Bratislava and Schwechat refineries will cover any shortfall, reducing the risk of the fuel-rationing episodes that disrupted flights in June 2025.

While Austrian focuses on keeping its aircraft fuelled and on time, travellers still need their documentation in order. VisaHQ’s Austria portal (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) offers a fast, concierge-style way to secure business or tourist visas, track shifting entry rules in real time and process multiple applications at once—an especially useful tool when those new non-stop routes inspire last-minute incentive trips.

Operationally, Austrian is re-activating its “Travel Assistants” programme: multilingual students in red uniforms stationed at key gates to help transfer passengers navigate new biometric Entry/Exit kiosks. Average minimum connection time at the hub has dropped from 40 to 35 minutes since the kiosks’ rollout, the carrier claims. Business travellers also benefit from an enlarged network: seven new seasonal destinations—including Bergen, Alicante and Ponta Delgada—come online between May and October, offering more non-stop options for corporate retreats and incentive trips. Premium-class passengers on long-haul Boeing 787-9 services will experience upgraded seats with direct-aisle access and wireless charging. Travel-procurement managers should note that Austrian’s corporate fares will rise by an average of 3.2 percent from 1 June to offset higher labour costs. The airline recommends enrolling travellers in its automatic re-booking service, which can reroute passengers via Munich or Zurich within 20 minutes if Vienna experiences thunderstorm ground stops.
