EU Entry/Exit System fully operational—what Brazilian travellers must know
The European Union confirmed on 28 April 2026 that its digital Entry/Exit System (EES) is now live at all Schengen external borders, replacing manual passport stamping for third-country nationals, including Brazilians. According to an analysis by the European Parliament’s Research Service, the database had already logged more than 52 million crossings in its first weeks of operation. The EES captures facial biometrics and four fingerprints on first entry and automatically records each subsequent exit or refusal of entry. Travellers can register on arrival or pre-enrol online where facilities exist. Border guards rely on the system to calculate the 90/180-day stay rule and to identify over-stayers instantly, reducing discretion at the booth. For Brazilian citizens, who remain visa-exempt for short-term visits, the biggest practical change is time: first-time enrolment can add five to ten minutes per traveller. Travel managers should therefore advise staff to build larger buffers into flight connections within Europe until passenger volumes stabilise.

In this transition period, VisaHQ’s Brazil-focused portal (https://www.visahq.com/brazil/) can guide travellers through optional online pre-enrolment, provide real-time alerts on EES queue times, and notify corporate mobility teams the moment ETIAS goes live, ensuring smoother, compliant trips.

Carriers flying to Lisbon, Madrid and Paris—Brazil’s three busiest gateways—have already warned of potential boarding-gate cut-off discipline. Looking ahead, the EU still plans to launch the ETIAS travel authorisation in late 2026. Once ETIAS is live, Brazilians will need an online pre-clearance (expected to cost €7) in addition to EES registration. Companies rotating project teams through Europe should update their immigration calendars now to avoid non-compliance once the twin systems operate in tandem.
