Weekend engineering works on Brussels eastern ring to disrupt suburban and airport trains
Infrabel, the Belgian rail-infrastructure manager, resumed major overhead-line renewal on the eastern orbital route between Haren and Meiser over the weekend of 25–26 April, prompting SNCB/NMBS to divert or cancel a number of local and regional trains serving Brussels Airport and the EU quarter.

For international travellers forced to rethink itineraries at short notice, staying on top of visa requirements is equally vital. VisaHQ’s Belgium portal (https://www.visahq.com/belgium/) streamlines the process of confirming eligibility, preparing documents and submitting applications online, allowing commuters and cargo agents alike to focus on rerouting while we handle the paperwork.

The project— part of a wider €540 million modernisation of the capital’s ‘Petit Ring’ commuter spine— requires power to be cut on sections of Line 26 during overnight and daytime blocks. While InterCity services are mostly being re-routed via Schaerbeek, suburban S-Trains and peak-hour P-services have been thinned, with some coaches replaced by shuttle buses. Infrabel says the work is critical to raise line capacity ahead of the December 2026 timetable, when additional airport expresses and cross-border ICE diversions are planned. For expatriates and multinational staff who rely on the ring for rapid transfers between corporate campuses in Diegem, the NATO district and the European Institutions, the timing is awkward: the Easter school holiday has already pushed passenger numbers 6 % above the seasonal average. Mobility managers are therefore advising employees to add at least 30 minutes to journeys to Zaventem and to consider the frequent De Lijn ‘Ringtrambus’ as an alternative. The disruption also affects freight forwarders. With electrification switched off, night-time container shuttles from the Port of Antwerp are forced onto diesel detours, adding cost just as shippers face surcharges linked to Red-Sea diversions. Infrabel insists the long-term gain— a faster, fully-electrified bypass capable of 140 km/h— outweighs the short-term pain. Works are scheduled to finish by 04:00 on Monday 27 April, but a further blockade is pencilled in for the Ascension Day weekend. Companies with critical just-in-time supply chains are urged to subscribe to Infrabel’s SMS alert service to track any over-runs.
