Eurowings pilots call 24-hour strike for 16 April, German domestic network faces fresh turbulence
Barely a day after Lufthansa crews returned to work, the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union escalated pressure within the Lufthansa Group by announcing a 24-hour strike of pilots at Eurowings GmbH for Thursday, 16 April. The carrier warns that all flights departing German airports between 00:01 and 23:59 are at risk, although its sister airline Eurowings Europe is **not** affected. Eurowings operates a point-to-point model that underpins much of Germany’s intra-European and domestic corporate shuttle market, with major bases in Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne-Bonn and Stuttgart. The action threatens to cancel or delay up to 500 rotations, disrupting commuters, project engineers and SME exporters who rely on first-wave departures for same-day business trips. VC is demanding alignment of Eurowings pilot pay with the mainline Lufthansa scale and a cap on maximum monthly flight time. Management insists that margins in the low-cost unit cannot support parity pay. Last-minute chartering of partner airlines and wet-lease capacity will keep a “large proportion” of flights operating, but travellers are urged to monitor the Eurowings app and consider rail alternatives – especially on dense corridors such as Düsseldorf–Berlin and Hamburg–Munich.

While travellers scramble to rearrange itineraries, it’s also an ideal moment to ensure that passports, visas and residence permits are up to date. VisaHQ’s Germany portal (https://www.visahq.com/germany/) provides a quick, centralised service for checking entry requirements, renewing documents and organising courier pick-ups, helping mobility teams avoid compliance headaches when sudden route changes strand employees overnight or route them through alternative airports.

For global mobility teams, key tasks include:
• Re-booking critical staff onto unaffected Eurowings Europe or ICE rail services.
• Updating duty-of-care trackers where travellers overnight unexpectedly.
• Communicating EU 261 rights (compensation up to €400 on short-haul).
• Checking that residence-permit windows are not breached for non-EU employees whose day-trips turn into longer stays.

VC has hinted that more short “warning strikes” could follow should negotiations fail. HR and travel managers should therefore build scenario plans for rolling disruption through spring.
