Beijing Signals 12-Month Extension of Bilateral Visa-Free Travel With Russia
Multiple diplomatic sources disclosed on 13 April that China has informed Moscow of its intent to prolong the current bilateral visa-free arrangement by another year, potentially running through September 2027. The pilot programme, launched in late 2025, allows ordinary passport holders from both countries to enter the other for up to 30 days without applying for a visa. Although formal notes have yet to be exchanged, both governments appear keen to lock in the extension before the summer tourism season. Trade ministry data show Russian business arrivals to China jumped 27 percent in 2025, while tour operators in Hainan reported a 120 percent rise in Russian holidaymakers. Airlines such as China Eastern and Aeroflot have already filed for additional frequencies to Beijing, Shanghai and Haikou for the June–October period.

In cases where travelers fall outside the 30-day, ordinary-passport waiver—for instance journalists, students, or professionals needing long-term work permits—VisaHQ can take the administrative burden off their hands. Through its China portal (https://www.visahq.com/china/), the firm provides up-to-date checklists, digital application tools and courier options so applicants secure the right paperwork quickly, ensuring trips stay on schedule even when visas are still required.

For corporate mobility teams the policy brings clarity: project engineers, energy-sector suppliers and tech-startup founders travelling between Moscow, St Petersburg, Harbin and Shenzhen can continue to schedule meetings on short notice without visa lead-times. Logistics chains that rely on hand-carried samples or urgent maintenance teams crossing the land border at Manzhouli will likewise benefit. Analysts caution that the annual-renewal format allows Beijing to recalibrate quickly if irregular migration spikes, but barring that, the reciprocal waiver is expected to become a semi-permanent fixture as energy and agricultural trade deepen. Companies should, however, brief travellers on payment-system work-arounds; international cards issued in Russia still face patchy acceptance on Chinese mobile-wallet platforms, and pre-registration for UnionPay or cash alternatives remains advisable. The extension will also keep Russia in China’s expanding club of 50 countries enjoying some form of visa-free entry, a group Beijing is leveraging to rebuild inbound tourism revenues and strengthen strategic partnerships.
