China Southern inaugurates Urumqi–Frankfurt service, giving Xinjiang its first direct link to Europe
China Southern Airlines has launched a twice-weekly intercontinental service that flies Guangzhou → Urumqi → Frankfurt and back, creating the first direct passenger connection between Xinjiang and Germany. The inaugural flight, CZ6041, departed Urumqi Tianshan International Airport on 1 June and landed in Frankfurt eight hours later, with the return CZ6042 taking off the same evening. The new route supplements China Southern’s four daily Guangzhou-Frankfurt rotations and is operated with Boeing 787-9 aircraft configured for 289 seats. Beijing framed the launch as part of efforts to widen Xinjiang’s “air silk road” and integrate the region into Belt-and-Road trade corridors. At a 3 June foreign-ministry press briefing, spokesperson Mao Ning noted that the flight would “facilitate travel and mutual understanding,” pushing back against suggestions it could be used for repatriations. For business travellers, the timetable is designed to enable same-day onward connections to more than 30 domestic destinations from Urumqi and to 50 European cities from Frankfurt, reducing total journey times between western China and the EU by up to six hours compared with routing via Beijing or Shanghai. Cargo holds are configured for 12 tonnes of belly freight, a boon for Xinjiang’s perishable-food exporters and German manufacturers shipping aviation parts to nearby Horgos Free Trade Zone.

If you need help navigating China’s evolving visa policies—whether for the 72-hour transit waiver in Urumqi or the nationwide 30-day exemption for German passport holders—VisaHQ’s dedicated China portal (https://www.visahq.com/china/) can handle the application process, provide real-time updates, and ensure all documentation aligns with your itinerary on the new Guangzhou–Urumqi–Frankfurt route.

Urumqi airport authorities said they processed 370 immigration clearances for the first westbound leg, 40 % of them foreign passport holders. To cope with expected summer demand, the airport has re-opened two automated e-gate lanes for passengers holding Chinese residence permits and launched German-language signage across Terminal 3. The new service signals that China’s secondary hubs are back in long-haul expansion mode. Mobility managers should update preferred-routing guides for staff heading to western China, and check transit-visa requirements: EU nationals can enter Urumqi visa-free for 72 hours when holding confirmed onward tickets, while German passport holders also benefit from China’s nationwide 30-day visa-waiver in force through 31 December 2026.
