IRCC Tightens Documentation Rules for Digital Nomads Entering Canada
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada quietly updated its program-delivery instructions on May 26 2026 to require all remote workers entering Canada as visitors—so-called “digital nomads”—to carry evidence that 100 % of their income is earned outside the country. The change reverses 2023 guidance that said no additional paperwork was necessary beyond standard visitor requirements. Acceptable proof now includes foreign employment contracts, recent pay slips, overseas tax documents or business registrations.

If you’re unsure how to pull together the right paperwork before you travel, VisaHQ can help. Their Canada-specific portal (https://www.visahq.com/canada/) walks applicants through every required document, offers real-time checklist tracking, and provides optional expert review—saving both travelers and HR teams from last-minute surprises at the border.

Border officers have been told they may refuse entry if a traveller cannot substantiate foreign income sources or show an intent to depart Canada when authorized stay ends. The six-month maximum stay for visitors remains unchanged, and any work for a Canadian employer continues to require a work permit or another section 186 exemption. Family members accompanying a digital nomad must each hold their own temporary-resident status (visitor, worker or student) and are no longer automatically authorized to work or study. The clarification closes a grey area that had complicated school enrollments for dependants and open-work-permit applications for spouses. For global mobility programs the message is clear: remote employees dispatched to Canada for short stints must now prepare a dossier of foreign-income documentation well in advance of travel. Employers should update pre-departure checklists and warn nomads that cursory “laptop-only” explanations at the border may no longer suffice.
