India launches digital OCI: QR-coded ‘e-OCI’ replaces booklet for 4.7 million overseas citizens
The government has replaced the physical Overseas Citizen of India booklet with a smartphone-based ‘e-OCI’ carrying a scannable QR code, effective 18 May 2026. The move promises faster immigration, tighter security and fully online lifecycle services, but also enforces a stricter ban on dual passports for minors.
