Haikou – Jakarta route to operate six days a week from 6 June
Hainan Airlines will add two extra weekly rotations on its Haikou (Meilan) – Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta) service from 6 June, increasing frequency from four to six flights a week, China News Service reported on 18 May. The carrier will continue to use Boeing 737 aircraft, with the south-bound flight departing Haikou at 14:30 Beijing time and arriving in Jakarta at 18:10 local time; the north-bound sector leaves Jakarta at 19:15 and lands in Haikou at 01:05 the next day. The decision follows months of consistently high load factors—averaging more than 80 percent—on the route, which was inaugurated shortly after China reinstated visa-free entry to Hainan for citizens of 59 countries. Local authorities are supporting the added capacity with RMB 5 million (about USD 690,000) in inbound airfare subsidies distributed through Ctrip’s international app; travellers from seven ASEAN countries as well as Japan, South Korea and China’s Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions can obtain up to RMB 400 off round-trip tickets, while passengers from other markets can receive up to RMB 600. Corporate mobility managers will welcome the denser schedule because it provides same-week out-and-back options that align with typical four-day business-trip patterns and reduces the need for overnight stays in Jakarta. Cargo shippers are also expected to benefit: Jakarta is a key export hub for Indonesian seafood and tropical fruit destined for Hainan’s duty-free retail sector, while Hainan’s pharmaceuticals and high-tech components move southbound. For global assignment teams, the expansion underscores Hainan’s growing role as a South-east Asian gateway. Meilan Airport now offers 29 international and regional passenger routes, and provincial officials say seventh-freedom services to Laos and new long-haul links to Abu Dhabi and Osaka are under negotiation. Employers with staff based in Hainan should update travel policies to reflect the wider connectivity and remind travellers that the province’s 30-day visa-free scheme does not automatically permit onward travel to China’s mainland without a separate visa.

Looking ahead, observers predict that Haikou could emerge as an alternative hub to Hong Kong or Guangzhou for intra-ASEAN meetings, particularly once the Hainan Free Trade Port’s promised 15-day visa-free business regime for all nationalities enters into force in 2027.
