EU Entry/Exit System Blocks 32,000 Arrivals; Austria Urged to Phase Out Internal Border Checks
The European Commission’s fifth Schengen Report, released on 18 May 2026, reveals that the new Entry/Exit System (EES) has already denied entry to 32,000 third-country nationals in its first six months of phased operation. More than 66 million travellers were biometrically registered, and 800 security ‘hits’ were flagged across the bloc. Commission Vice-President Henna Virkkunen hailed the numbers as proof that technology can safeguard free movement. Yet the report singles out six member states—including Austria—that continue to apply systematic controls at internal land borders, some for over a decade. Brussels reiterated that such measures must remain exceptional and invited Vienna to explore “less disruptive alternatives” such as targeted police checks and real-time data sharing. Austria currently maintains passport controls on its borders with Hungary, Slovenia, Czechia and Slovakia, citing smuggling networks and secondary migration. While business travellers generally experience minor delays, freight operators complain of cost overruns linked to driver overtime and just-in-time penalties. The Commission’s nudge raises the possibility that Austria may need to justify extensions more rigorously or face infringement proceedings. From a corporate-mobility perspective the findings are double-edged. On the one hand, the EES promises faster, automated clearance for compliant travellers; on the other, employers must ensure that staff from visa-exempt countries respect the 90/180-day Schengen rule now enforced automatically by exit scans.

For companies looking to simplify Schengen compliance, VisaHQ’s Austria portal (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) provides an all-in-one platform that tracks employees’ days in the zone, issues real-time overstay alerts, and streamlines visa or work-permit filings with expert support—helping HR teams stay ahead of the stricter EES enforcement landscape.

Companies should audit travel histories and update HR systems to capture absences accurately. The Commission will review internal-border notifications again in October 2026. Austrian policymakers have given no indication of drawing down checks beforehand, but pressure is mounting as neighbouring Germany signals a phased withdrawal in 2027.
