Government Unveils 20-Day ‘Short Hajj’ Package to Help Working Professionals
Responding to feedback from employees and entrepreneurs who struggle to be away from work for six weeks, India’s Ministry of Minority Affairs introduced a ‘Short Hajj Package’ on 16 May 2026. The new option lets 10,000 Indian pilgrims complete all mandatory rituals and return within roughly 20 days instead of the usual 40–45, with the first charter departing Kochi on 17 May. Flights under the scheme will operate from seven embarkation points—Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Kochi—using direct charters to Jeddah and Madinah. Because accommodation is booked closer to the holy sites and ground transport is consolidated, estimated per-person costs fall by about ₹45,000 compared with the standard government package, officials said.

For travellers sorting out last-minute paperwork, VisaHQ’s India platform (https://www.visahq.com/india/) can expedite Saudi visa applications, arrange document collection and provide live status updates, ensuring pilgrims spend less time on administration and more on planning their spiritual journey.

The move is expected to benefit doctors, IT consultants and SME owners who could not previously spare the time for the longer itinerary. Travel-risk teams should note that return dates fall during peak summer; companies may wish to brief employees on heat-management protocols and ensure international medical cover includes Saudi Arabia. Industry observers also see the shortened option as a pilot for other religious-tourism corridors such as the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra once China reopens. If successful, future Hajj quotas could be split into ‘express’ and ‘classic’ categories, creating more flexible mobility windows within India’s overall allotment from Saudi authorities.
