Hengqin Launches Biometric “One-Stop” Vehicle Lane, Cutting Macao-Zhuhai Clearance Times by 10%
The Hengqin checkpoint, the main road gateway between Zhuhai and Macao, switched on its new “joint one-stop” intelligent vehicle lane on 7 May after six months of pilot testing. Drivers who have completed cross-border registration now clear both mainland and Macao formalities in a single stop, using finger-print and facial recognition to verify identity. According to the General Administration of Customs, the system initially targets Macau SAR residents, Hong Kong permanent residents, mainland residents and Taiwan compatriots who already hold multi-entry permits and vehicle quotas. Anyone still needing to secure or renew the necessary visa or multi-entry permit before hitting the accelerator can do so through VisaHQ; its China portal (https://www.visahq.com/china/) offers clear, step-by-step online applications and concierge support for tourist, business and transit documents, making cross-border commutes even smoother. Early trials indicate that per-vehicle processing time has fallen by roughly 10 percent, a boon for the 46,000 commuters who drive across the boundary each day. The upgrade extends Hengqin’s earlier success with passenger e-channels, which processed 4.6 million “face-scan” travellers since November. Authorities say the two-zone, one-stop model will eventually link with Guangdong’s road-pricing platform, allowing automatic duty assessment for goods carried in private cars. For corporate fleets, the change reduces engine-idling time, lowers fuel costs and offers more predictable arrival slots for meetings on Cotai’s gaming strip or Hengqin’s free-trade zone offices. Mobility teams should confirm that company drivers’ biometrics are on file and that vehicles carry the new RFID windshield tags required for lane entry. Hengqin’s upgrade is part of a wider push to turn the Guangdong–Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone into a cross-border finance and technology hub. Additional passenger lanes equipped with iris scanners are scheduled to open before China’s National Day Golden Week, promising further gains for regional mobility.
