Air Canada to Cut Four U.S. Summer Routes as Jet-Fuel Prices Spike
Air Canada confirmed late Friday that it will suspend four trans-border routes months earlier than planned because soaring jet-fuel prices have rendered the flights uneconomic.

In a statement first obtained by The Canadian Press, the carrier said service from Toronto to Sacramento will end 1 August, while flights from Vancouver to Raleigh–Durham will stop on 29 July. Montreal–Austin and Toronto–Charleston will follow on 6 and 7 September respectively. All four routes had been scheduled to operate through the busy summer travel season.

The decision comes as Middle-East supply disruptions linked to the Iran conflict have driven North-American jet-A spot prices above US $4.00 per gallon—roughly 65 percent higher than a year ago. Fuel accounts for about a third of an airline’s operating costs; Air Canada executives warned in April that a prolonged spike would force both fare increases and capacity cuts. The early withdrawal of the four niche business-travel routes is the first concrete sign of that strategy.

Although the affected flights represent less than one percent of Air Canada’s total trans-border capacity, travel-management companies say the move signals a more conservative stance toward secondary U.S. markets. Corporate travel buyers in the technology corridors of North Carolina and Texas, in particular, will have fewer nonstop options and may need to connect through Chicago or Newark on Star Alliance partner United Airlines. That will lengthen typical door-to-door times by up to three hours and could increase the cost of last-minute trips.

Meanwhile, travelers scrambling to adjust itineraries should also ensure that their travel documents are in order. VisaHQ’s Canadian portal (https://www.visahq.com/canada/) can quickly arrange U.S. visas, eTAs, and other entry documentation online, giving corporate travel managers and individual flyers one less headache while they rebook around the suspended flights.

Air Canada is offering re-accommodation on alternative routings or full refunds. The airline also plans to up-gauge aircraft on core business routes such as Toronto–LaGuardia and Vancouver–San Francisco to preserve overall seat supply. Travel-policy managers should update booking tools and communications to travellers as Global Distribution System schedules will show the suspensions over the weekend.

For mobility planners, the announcement is a reminder to build fuel-price contingencies into 2026 travel budgets. Employers with frequent travellers on the affected routes should lock in corporate contract rates on remaining nonstop services quickly, as reduced competition typically leads to higher average fares within weeks.
