Czech Transport Ministry urges early renewal of 409,000 driver licences via new e-portal
The Ministry of Transport has warned that more than 409,000 Czech driving licences expire between now and 31 December 2026—and it wants motorists to renew online rather than queuing at district offices. A press release issued on 6 May shows that the heaviest renewal peaks will fall in August, October and November, each with roughly 50,000 documents reaching their end date. Holders can now submit exchange requests up to three months in advance through the government’s Portál Dopravy (Transport Portal) and have the new licence delivered to a pick-up box or municipal office of their choice. While the announcement targets residents of all nationalities, it carries special weight for expatriates and frequent business travellers. Under EU rules, Czech licences double as proof of identity when renting vehicles across the Schengen Area; an expired card can derail cross-border meetings or invalidate insurance.

If you are juggling licence renewals alongside visa or residence formalities, VisaHQ can help keep the paperwork under control. The company’s online platform—see https://www.visahq.com/czech-republic/—lets users arrange Czech and Schengen visas, monitor application status and receive reminders, providing a similar digital convenience to the Transport Portal and ensuring all your travel documents stay current.

The ministry therefore recommends checking the validity date before scheduling summer road trips to neighbouring Germany, Austria or Poland. Digital submission takes “a matter of minutes,” says Transport Minister Ivan Bednárik, who notes that more than 26 % of expiring licences have already been renewed since January thanks to the portal’s e-signature function. First-time users authenticate with a bank ID or the EU-wide e-IDAS login and upload a passport-style photo. The system then pushes status updates by email or SMS and will soon introduce automatic reminders 30 days before a licence lapses.

For global mobility teams managing fleets or company cars, the new tools reduce administrative overhead: HR can bulk-check employee licence dates and schedule renewal appointments during quieter work periods. The ministry has also hinted that, from 2027, foreign nationals holding long-term Czech residence will be able to exchange certain third-country licences entirely online, pending a forthcoming amendment to the Road Traffic Act. Failure to renew carries fines of up to CZK 2,500 and, more importantly, voids coverage under most corporate car-rental insurance policies. Mobility managers should therefore add licence-expiry audits to their regular compliance calendars alongside visa and work-permit checks.
