Poll Shows Majority of Swiss Support 10-Million Population Cap Initiative
A new nationwide poll conducted for public broadcaster SRG/SSR and the 20 Minuten/Tamedia newspapers has, for the first time, found that a slender majority of Swiss voters would approve the Swiss People’s Party’s (SVP) “No to a Switzerland of 10 Million” initiative in the referendum scheduled for 14 June 2026. Fifty-two percent of respondents said they would vote in favour, 46 percent would vote against and 2 percent remain undecided. If accepted, the initiative would write a hard ceiling of ten million permanent residents into the constitution and oblige the Federal Council to take “the necessary measures” to hold population growth in check. In practice this would mean sharply reducing net immigration, abandoning the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons with the EU and tightening quotas for both third-country nationals and cross-border commuters. Switzerland’s population stood at 9.1 million at the end of 2025, leaving little headroom for future growth under the proposed cap.

Business and academic leaders have warned that the plan could choke labour-market supply in critical sectors such as life-sciences, engineering and hospitality, where as many as 30 percent of workers currently hold foreign passports. Economists at UBS estimate that Swiss GDP growth could fall by up to 0.7 percentage points per year if net migration were cut to the levels needed to stay below the cap.

Against this backdrop, many employers and expatriates are already reviewing their visa and permit options. VisaHQ, a digital visa consultancy that covers Switzerland (https://www.visahq.com/switzerland/) among other jurisdictions, can simplify that process by providing real-time updates on entry rules, work-permit categories and required documentation, helping both businesses and individuals navigate any future quota changes.

Opponents have dubbed the text the “chaos initiative”, arguing that it would jeopardise bilateral relations with the EU and trigger retaliation that could hit Swiss exporters. The SVP counters that housing shortages, rising health-insurance premiums and congested transport networks show that Switzerland is already straining under demographic pressure. Party vice-president Céline Amaudruz told reporters that “uncontrolled immigration is eroding our quality of life and our cultural identity”, adding that the initiative offers a “clear, democratic” mechanism to steer future growth. With six weeks left until polling day, both camps are mobilising considerable resources. The government and a cross-party alliance of centrist, green and left-wing parties have launched a campaign under the slogan “For Switzerland without walls”, while the SVP is touring all 26 cantons with a bright-red “10-Millionen Stopp-Bus”. Turnout is expected to be high, not least among the 410,000 cross-border commuters whose status could be directly affected.
