Austria and Germany Vow to Intensify Deportations to Syria and Afghanistan

Austria and Germany Vow to Intensify Deportations to Syria and Afghanistan
On the sidelines of the Luxembourg interior-ministers summit, Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner held bilateral talks with his German counterpart Alexander Dobrindt on 28 April. In a joint statement the two ministers said “regular deportations to conflict zones demonstrate that our migration turnaround is working” and promised to expand charter removals to both Afghanistan and Syria. Austria already operated Europe’s first post-2021 deportation flight to Damascus earlier this year, while Germany removed 25 Afghan nationals to Kabul overnight on 27 April. Both countries say tougher enforcement has resulted in more removals than new asylum applications in Q1 2026.

Businesses and private travelers who need to secure or renew Austrian visas can streamline the entire process through VisaHQ. The platform’s dedicated Austria page (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) offers up-to-date guidance, document checklists, and deadline reminders, helping employers keep foreign staff compliant and travelers avoid the pitfalls that could lead to detention or removal.

Human-rights advocates call the policy dangerous, citing UN reports of deteriorating security in both destinations. From a mobility-compliance perspective, however, the signal is clear: individuals who overstay or breach visa conditions face a higher risk of detention and forcible removal—even if their home country is deemed unsafe by most EU states. Companies employing third-country nationals in Austria should review right-to-work audits and ensure that all residence permits remain valid throughout the assignment. Dependants with tolerated status should be prioritised for regularisation, because family-reunification channels remain frozen until mid-year.
