Kraków Airport opens interim terminal, adding capacity for 2 million more passengers
John Paul II International Airport Kraków–Balice has completed a nine-month fast-track project to convert a former cargo hall into a 4,500-square-metre “support terminal” with six non-Schengen gates, enabling the airport to handle up to 2 million additional passengers per year. Aviation portal Pasazer.com broke the story on 24 April, noting that the temporary facility will remain in use while the main terminal undergoes a multi-phase expansion. The extra capacity is critical for multinational firms that rely on Kraków as a regional hub for technology and business-process-outsourcing talent. Passenger volume at KRK has rebounded to 2019 levels and is projected to exceed 11 million this year, driven by Ryanair, Wizz Air and LOT’s new Bologna route. Without the interim terminal, carriers warned that slot constraints could force them to cap frequencies during the summer peak. For business travellers the upgrade should translate into shorter queue times at security and border control, particularly for non-Schengen flights to the UK, Ireland and the Middle East.

Whether you’re planning meetings in Kraków or connecting onwards outside the Schengen Area, VisaHQ’s Poland portal (https://www.visahq.com/poland/) can streamline the entire visa process for you and your team. From UK work permits to Saudi business visas, the platform offers real-time requirements, digital document upload, and courier hand-off, helping travellers avoid last-minute paperwork surprises and make the most of the airport’s new fast-track capacity.

The building features automated EES kiosks, additional Fast Track lanes and expanded lounge space, bringing the airport into line with Entry/Exit System requirements that became fully operational EU-wide on 10 April. Airport management says the quick-build solution cost PLN 110 million—around one-third of a bricks-and-mortar extension—and can be dismantled or repurposed once the permanent terminal expansion opens in 2029. Environmental groups have praised the modular design, which uses recycled steel frames and solar panels to power lighting and HVAC systems. Companies with high volumes of shuttle flights between Kraków and European HQs should revisit travel budgets, as airlines are already loading extra capacity and promotional fares for the winter timetable. HR teams relocating staff to the city can highlight the lower congestion as a quality-of-life benefit, while travel managers may wish to renegotiate corporate lounge contracts to include the new facility.
