Czech Government Approves Overhaul of Passport and ID Issuance to Ease Applications at Home and Abroad
The Czech Cabinet has quietly ushered in the most far-reaching rewrite of its Travel Documents Act and ID Card Act in more than a decade. Approved on April 21 2026, the amendment promises to spare citizens and long-term residents from duplicated biometric enrolment and to let Czech embassies issue full-fledged passports and identity cards for the first time. Under today’s process, anyone who needs both a new passport and an updated ID card must make two trips to a municipal office and have fingerprints and facial images captured twice—an inconvenience magnified for globally mobile professionals who return to the Czech Republic only briefly. Beginning 1 January 2027, a single set of biometrics will serve for both documents.

VisaHQ can streamline the transition for both individuals and HR departments: its dedicated Czech portal (https://www.visahq.com/czech-republic/) summarises the new biometric rules, arranges embassy appointments, and provides courier support so finished passports and ID cards reach clients wherever they are posted.

Perhaps the biggest practical gain for the international workforce is the expansion of consular powers. More than 600,000 Czechs live abroad, and thousands of expatriate employees cycle through foreign postings each year. Once embassies and consulates can issue passports and IDs directly, commuters on Schengen work assignments will no longer have to fly back to Prague or rely on temporary travel documents. For corporate mobility managers, that translates into fewer days of assignment downtime and lower travel costs. The legislation also introduces door-to-door options for applicants who are hospitalised, immobile or living in senior homes. A mobile enrolment kit—modelled on equipment already used by the Czech police at remote border crossings—will allow officials to capture fingerprints off-site and deliver finished documents the same way. Finally, the bill aligns the Czech system with the EU’s new digital Entry/Exit System (EES) by authorising temporary suspension or reactivation of a passport if an EU arrest warrant is issued. That tightening of security, coupled with the shift to single biometric capture, positions the Czech Republic as an early adopter of Europe’s move toward fully digital travel identities.
