Lufthansa Axes CityLine Fleet and Retires More Long-Haul Jets in Accelerated Cost-Cutting Drive

In a surprise mid-strike announcement on 17 April, the Lufthansa Group said it will permanently remove all 27 aircraft operated by its regional subsidiary CityLine from the flight schedule with effect from 18 April. The move is part of an “accelerated restructuring programme” designed to offset surging fuel prices and mounting losses from a wave of pilot and cabin-crew walk-outs that has paralysed Germany’s main hubs since Easter. The plan, detailed in a statement to the CAPA – Centre for Aviation news service, also calls for the retirement of Lufthansa’s last four Airbus A340-600s and the grounding of two Boeing 747-400s this autumn, followed by further cuts to the short- and medium-haul fleet during the winter 2026/27 season. Nine additional Airbus A350-900s will be re-allocated to leisure arm Discover Airlines, reflecting the group’s pivot to higher-margin long-haul holiday traffic.

For corporate travel managers, the immediate fallout is severe. CityLine operates a dense web of feeder routes linking secondary German cities such as Bremen, Friedrichshafen and Saarbrücken to Frankfurt and Munich. The overnight disappearance of those flights will push passengers onto Deutsche Bahn or low-cost carriers, lengthening journey times and forcing companies to rethink same-day meeting policies. Global assignment teams moving staff to Germany on Blue Cards or ICT permits may need to budget for hotel lay-overs when connecting to long-haul departures.

Amid this turbulence, companies and individual travellers grappling with last-minute itinerary changes can simplify at least one part of the journey by using VisaHQ. The platform’s Germany section (https://www.visahq.com/germany/) streamlines applications for Schengen business visas, Blue Cards and dependent permits, offering real-time tracking and expert support so that documentation is never the reason a rebooked flight is missed.

Lufthansa’s decision comes amid a 48-hour strike by the Vereinigung Cockpit pilots’ union that began on 16 April and has already grounded up to 90 percent of departures. Analysts say the fleet cuts are a signal to unions that management will sacrifice capacity—and jobs—rather than concede on pensions and pay scales. In the longer term, consolidating around fuel-efficient aircraft should help the airline meet the EU’s upcoming RefuelEU sustainable-aviation-fuel mandates without passing all costs on to travellers.

German tour operators welcomed the accelerated delivery of extra A350s to Discover Airlines, arguing that it preserves long-haul lift to holiday destinations just as consumer demand rebounds. Business-travel buyers, however, warned that shrinking domestic connectivity undermines Germany’s attractiveness as a European headquarters location. The German Business Travel Association (VDR) urged the government to fast-track high-speed-rail projects and consider temporary slot relief to allow other carriers to backfill essential routes.
