UAE and Eswatini abolish visas for each other’s citizens
The United Arab Emirates has added yet another country to its rapidly-growing list of visa-free partners. On 30 May 2026, Minister of State Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan and Eswatini’s Minister of Home Affairs Princess Lindiwe signed a memorandum of understanding in Abu Dhabi that waives entry-visa requirements for holders of ordinary, diplomatic and service passports of both nations. The agreement will come into force 30 days after the exchange of diplomatic notes confirming that all internal procedures have been completed. Although Eswatini is a small, land-locked kingdom in southern Africa, the deal is strategically significant for both sides. For the UAE it extends the reach of its world-leading passport and underlines a wider Africa strategy that already includes visa waivers with Botswana, South Africa, Kenya and the Seychelles. For Eswatini it eliminates visa costs that can exceed US $150 per traveller, removes processing times that often stretch to two weeks and opens new options for trade, medical tourism and education links via the Emirates and Etihad networks.

Travel planners looking beyond short-term stays can simplify more complex visa or residence applications through VisaHQ’s digital platform. The company’s dedicated UAE page (https://www.visahq.com/united-arab-emirates/) offers live requirement updates and end-to-end filing assistance, ensuring both Emirati and Eswatini nationals remain compliant as regulations evolve.

For mobility managers, the waiver instantly simplifies short-term assignment planning. Emirati technicians installing telecoms equipment for Eswatini Mobile, for example, will be able to board flights with only a passport and proof of vaccination. Conversely, Eswatini agribusiness executives exploring Gulf distribution channels can now schedule back-to-back meetings in Dubai and Abu Dhabi without waiting for approvals. Long-term work activities remain subject to the normal labour-residence permit process in each country, but the cost, compliance and lead-time savings for exploratory travel are substantial. The UAE continues to leverage visa diplomacy as a soft-power tool to strengthen political ties and position itself as a global hub. According to the Henley Passport Index, the Emirati passport has added 149 visa-free or visa-on-arrival destinations since 2006—more than any other country. The Eswatini pact suggests that further African agreements could follow, bolstering the UAE’s bid to become the preferred Middle-East stop-over for the continent’s booming outbound market. Corporate travel teams should update booking systems immediately: once the waiver is ratified, any automated prompts to obtain a UAE visit visa for Eswatini nationals—or vice-versa—will trigger unnecessary costs. Travellers should still carry proof of sufficient funds, onward/return tickets and at least six months’ passport validity to avoid discretionary refusals at the border.
