Vienna Airport reports Q1 passenger growth and unveils new long-haul link to Xi’an
Flughafen Wien AG released its first-quarter 2026 results on 21 May, showing group passenger numbers up 5.3 % to 8.35 million and net profit rising 5.3 % to €42 million. Vienna Airport itself handled 6.11 million travellers (+1.6 %) despite an 8 % dip in April caused by Easter shifting to March and capacity cuts by low-cost carriers. Management highlighted the diversification of the long-haul network: China Eastern inaugurated a twice-weekly Vienna–Xi’an service on 20 April, giving Austrian exporters and the sizeable Chinese community their first direct air bridge to northwest China’s technology hub.

Travellers taking advantage of these new long-haul links may also face evolving visa and entry requirements. VisaHQ’s Austria page (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) offers a fast, digital way to research and secure the necessary documents—whether that’s a Chinese business visa for engineers heading to Xi’an or a Schengen extension for inbound partners—helping firms keep itineraries on schedule and costs predictable.

Royal Jordanian, SalamAir and Romania’s Animawings will all add routes this summer, while Austrian Airlines has broadened its European map with Alicante, Bergen and Ponta Delgada, bringing the total network from Vienna to roughly 200 destinations. CEO Günther Ofner said the figures “confirm a resilient rebound” but warned that geopolitical instability in the Middle East and the reduction in ULCC traffic could suppress growth later in the year. Still, the airport is pressing ahead with a €1.5 billion capex programme, including the Terminal 3 Southern Expansion (opening Q2 2027) and a new 17,000 m² AirportCity office complex. For mobility planners the message is mixed. On the positive side, the Xi’an flights shorten door-to-door times for engineers shuttling between Austria’s semiconductor suppliers and China’s Shaanxi province, while the expanded summer schedule offers employees more options for bleisure trips. On the risk side, the airport reiterates that rollout of the EU Entry/Exit System in April has added 30-45 minutes at peak immigration for third-country nationals, and companies should build this into travel-day policies.
