Prague Airport Opens eGATE Fast-Track to Selected Non-EU Travellers
Prague’s Václav Havel Airport has quietly flipped the switch on a major upgrade to its border-control technology. From 15 May, citizens of the United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea can join EU, EEA and Swiss passport-holders in using the airport’s automated eGATE lanes when departing the Schengen Area. The expansion—confirmed by Prague Morning and later acknowledged by the Foreigners Police—comes just five weeks after the EU’s biometric Entry/Exit System (EES) became mandatory at all external Schengen borders.

Prague Airport Opens eGATE Fast-Track to Selected Non-EU Travellers

Travellers who need clarity on visa requirements or assistance securing the right documents can tap into VisaHQ’s expertise; its dedicated Czech Republic page (https://www.visahq.com/czech-republic/) lists up-to-date rules, processes online applications and even arranges courier pickup, making it easier to stay compliant while enjoying the new eGATE speed.

Until now, non-EU nationals were funnelled through staffed booths while the 24 self-service gates sat idle for a growing share of long-haul traffic. The new policy lets eligible travellers aged 15 and over scan a biometric passport, undergo a quick face-match and proceed directly to security in under 20 seconds. Airport operator Letiště Praha says the change will add thousands of people per day to the fast-track, cutting peak-summer queues without compromising security. For corporate travel managers the timing is ideal. Prague Airport expects record passenger volumes in July and August, and the Czech Republic hosts several large conventions—including the International Engineering Fair in Brno—during that window. Companies that rotate staff in on 90-day visa-free schedules will save precious minutes per trip while still meeting the EES requirement to record biometric data on first exit. There are caveats. The gates can only be used on departure from Terminal 1 (non-Schengen flights), and travellers must carry a compliant biometric passport with at least six months’ validity. Families with minors under 15 or passengers flagged for secondary inspection will still be directed to a manual booth. The police warn that anyone overstaying the 90/180-day limit will be automatically flagged in the EES and may be fined or refused re-entry. Looking ahead, the Interior Ministry is studying whether to widen eligibility to additional low-risk countries such as the United States, Australia and New Zealand before the Christmas peak. If that happens, Prague could join Amsterdam and Frankfurt in offering one of the most comprehensive automated-border programmes in continental Europe.
