Liberation-Day weekend to generate 4.7 million overnight stays as Italy tests its spring travel readiness
Italy’s first major holiday weekend of the year is under way, and the tourism research unit of Assoturismo Confesercenti forecasts some 4.7 million overnight stays between 24 and 27 April. Online-booking data show an average occupancy rate of 80 %, peaking at 89 % in mountain resorts and 85 % in art-city destinations such as Florence and Venice. The short break—anchored by Liberation Day on 25 April—serves as a dress rehearsal for the summer season and, crucially, for the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) that became mandatory at external Schengen airports on 10 April.

For overseas visitors still unsure about whether they need a visa, an ETIAS waiver or additional documentation under the new EES rules, VisaHQ can simplify the process. Its Italy page (https://www.visahq.com/italy/) lets travellers check requirements in seconds, submit digital applications and receive status alerts, helping them avoid last-minute snags that could turn busy holiday-weekend queues into missed connections.

Airports, rail operators and highway authority ANAS have activated contingency staffing; ANAS expects 95 million vehicle movements on national roads during the broader 24 April–3 May period. Hoteliers celebrate the demand rebound but warn that geopolitical uncertainty and volatile transport costs are encouraging ever-shorter bookings, forcing staff planners to operate with minimal visibility. The hospitality sector intends to hire 418,000 seasonal workers for the April-June quarter—20,000 more than in 2025—yet still fears shortages in kitchen and front-office roles. For business travellers the upside is greater hotel inventory at mid-season rates, especially in rural and spa destinations where occupancy lags (74–75 %). The downside is potential congestion at airports already struggling with EES queues. Corporate travel managers are advising travellers to build in at least an extra hour for departure formalities. Transport unions add that truck bans on 25 April and 26 April (09:00–22:00) could delay last-mile deliveries; critical shipments should be scheduled for 24 April or 30 April when restrictions are lifted.
