Lufthansa Axes 20,000 Flights and Will Lean More Heavily on Brussels Hub

Lufthansa Axes 20,000 Flights and Will Lean More Heavily on Brussels Hub
German flag-carrier Lufthansa announced on 22 April that it will cancel roughly 20,000 flights between April and October 2026 to offset soaring jet-fuel prices and the financial fallout from a wave of pilot and cabin-crew strikes earlier this month. The group said it will consolidate traffic through its six core hubs: Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Rome—and Brussels. Although most of the axed services originate in Germany, the decision to channel more passengers through Brussels Airport is a double-edged sword for Belgian business travellers. On the plus side, Lufthansa’s capacity cuts could translate into additional feeder flights on the Brussels–Frankfurt and Brussels–Munich routes, improving same-day connectivity to long-haul destinations. However, tighter schedules mean less redundancy; delays at other hubs could cascade into Zaventem, while premium-class award seat availability is expected to shrink. Travel-management companies (TMCs) are already urging corporates to re-check spring and summer itineraries.

For travellers suddenly facing new routings or unexpected layovers, sorting out transit or entry requirements can be a headache. VisaHQ’s Belgian portal (https://www.visahq.com/belgium/) lets passengers and mobility managers confirm visa rules in minutes and arrange fast-track processing, ensuring documentation keeps pace with Lufthansa’s shifting schedules.

Codeshare partners such as Brussels Airlines—also part of the Lufthansa Group—will rebook passengers where possible, but inventory on peak morning departures is limited. Employers with strict advance-purchase policies may need to allow exceptions to avoid steep last-minute fares. Lufthansa insists the move will save 40,000 tonnes of kerosene and protect profitability amid what it calls a “jet-fuel shock” triggered by wider Middle-East instability. Unions accuse the airline of using environmental rhetoric to justify route cuts that disproportionately affect regional airports. Whatever the motive, mobility managers with large German-Belgian travel volumes should expect schedule volatility well into Q3.
