Shanghai opens registration for 6th Global Talents Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition
Shanghai on 20 April began accepting applications for its 6th Global Talents Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition, a flagship programme that has attracted more than 41,000 overseas projects since 2017. Registration runs until 31 May, with regional preliminaries in June and finals in October. The competition targets foreign founders in integrated circuits, biomedicine, AI, green technology, high-end equipment and fashion. Seed-stage companies not yet registered in China are eligible, and winners can receive up to CNY 100 million (USD 14.7 million) in credit loans, free office space and fast-track residence permits under the city’s ‘Talent+’ scheme. Shanghai authorities position the event as a ‘one-stop landing pad’: semifinalists gain priority in obtaining Category B work permits, while Gold-, Silver- and Bronze-award teams are recommended for the Magnolia Talent Plan, which grants three-year residence cards within 10 working days.

For overseas entrepreneurs unsure about the paperwork required to take advantage of these incentives, VisaHQ can provide step-by-step assistance. Its online portal (https://www.visahq.com/china/) offers document checklists, real-time status tracking and expert reviews, helping founders and their families secure the right visas quickly so they can focus on pitching in Shanghai and building their China operations.

Participants also get concierge support for schooling, spousal visas and housing. For multinational HR teams, the competition offers a cost-effective route to relocate R&D staff or spin-off ventures into China’s largest commercial hub. Past alumni include German battery start-up KraftVolt, which now employs 120 engineers in Pudong, and Singaporean biotech firm NeoStem, recently granted a fast-track import licence for clinical samples. The 2026 edition introduces an ‘AI for Science’ special track and a ‘One-Person Company’ category aimed at digital nomads—underlining Shanghai’s bid to court individual technologists amid global competition for talent. Remote finalists will pitch virtually but must appear in person for the October finals to activate visa facilitation privileges.
