Report Finds Outsourcing Swiss Asylum Procedures Abroad ‘Legally Possible but Practically Unworkable’
A Federal Council report released on 15 April 2026 says outsourcing asylum or return procedures to third countries is theoretically legal but faces “major legal and practical obstacles.” Switzerland would still be accountable for refugee protection, costs would be high, and partner stability uncertain. The government will therefore focus on strengthening its domestic asylum system while monitoring EU experiments, leaving current in-country processes intact for mobility stakeholders.
