Qantas slashes domestic capacity but boosts London and Paris services amid cost headwinds
Qantas Airways has announced a tactical shift in its 2026 northern-summer schedule that will see the flag-carrier trim overall domestic flying by one per cent while simultaneously adding seats on its most lucrative European routes. The decision, confirmed on 16 April, comes as jet-fuel prices hover near record highs—adding an estimated AUD 800 million to the group’s annual operating bill—and as Australia’s two-speed economy pushes leisure demand toward long-haul “bucket-list” trips rather than short-hop domestic getaways. Under the revised network plan, Sydney–London (via Perth or Singapore) will move to triple-daily during July and August 2026. Melbourne–London will return to twice-daily for the first time since 2020, while the recently launched Perth–Paris service becomes year-round instead of seasonal. To free aircraft for Europe, Qantas will reduce frequencies on trunk domestic corridors such as Sydney–Brisbane and Melbourne–Adelaide during the fourth quarter of calendar 2026. Management stressed that capacity on resources-heavy routes to WA mining centres will be protected to “support the national economy.” Aviation economists say the pivot reflects a global trend: carriers are redeploying wide-body aircraft from slower domestic markets into higher-yield intercontinental sectors as pent-up outbound demand remains robust. For corporates, the re-balancing means thinner domestic schedules—and potentially higher fares—during late-2026, but significantly more options for executives shuttling between Australia and Europe. Travel managers should review contracted fare classes for the last half of FY 2026 to ensure seats on peak Europe flights remain accessible.

Before locking in new itineraries, executives and holiday-makers alike should also confirm that passports and any requisite Schengen or transit visas are valid well past the travel dates. VisaHQ’s Australia portal (https://www.visahq.com/australia/) offers an easy, end-to-end way to check entry requirements, lodge online applications and track approvals for more than 200 destinations, helping travellers sidestep last-minute surprises as demand for Europe spikes.

Companies with heavy east-coast travel budgets may also want to compare Qantas’ new pricing against Virgin Australia’s codeshare network, which is not cutting capacity on the Golden Triangle routes. As Qantas proceeds with fleet renewal, additional Boeing 787-9s and the first Airbus A350-1000 ‘Project Sunrise’ aircraft are expected to provide further flexibility from 2027 onward. All eyes will now turn to the airline’s full-year results in August, where investors will look for early evidence that shifting capacity offshore can shield margins from domestic cost pressures without ceding too much home-market share.
