Swiss Embassies Issued Over Half-a-Million Schengen Visas in 2025 – New SEM Report
A new data release from the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) analysed by The Local shows that Switzerland issued 542,968 short-stay Schengen visas last year – more than any previous 12-month period.

The figures, published on 13 April, land at a delicate time: tight labour markets have Swiss firms courting foreign talent, even as June’s ‘No-to-Ten-Million’ referendum campaigns to cap immigration.

Indians accounted for the lion’s share at 221,629 visas, followed by nationals of China, Thailand and Turkey.

Tourism remains the prime driver, but SEM notes that ‘business’ overtook ‘family visit’ as the second-largest motivation, reflecting a rebound in face-to-face commerce after pandemic-era travel curbs.

Seasonality is pronounced. Nearly half of all visas were issued between April and July, with May alone topping 69,000 approvals – a period that coincides with Switzerland’s convention-centre high season and the run-up to summer tourism.

For applicants who want to avoid the seasonal crunch, VisaHQ can streamline the entire Schengen process. Its Switzerland page (https://www.visahq.com/switzerland/) guides users through document checklists, appointment booking and courier delivery, helping tourists, executives and HR teams submit error-free applications faster and with less stress.

For corporate mobility managers the numbers have two implications. First, summer appointment slots at Swiss consulates will be scarce; HR teams should begin work-permit and business-visa files well in advance.

Second, Geneva and Zurich border police will need to process heavier volumes of third-country nationals just as the EES bedding-in problems strain resources.

Politically, the data will feed both sides of the immigration debate. Pro-business groups argue the surge underlines Switzerland’s attractiveness and the need for open channels. Restrictionists will frame the half-million figure as evidence of mounting demographic pressure.

Either way, visa demand shows no sign of cooling as the country gears up for a busy 2026 travel season.
