Lufthansa pilot strike reverberates in Austria as AUA ramps up capacity to keep business travel moving
Austrian companies woke up on Sunday (12 April 2026) to the prospect of another week of flight disruption after the German pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) confirmed a 48-hour strike at Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, CityLine and Eurowings from 00:01 on Monday to 23:59 on Tuesday. Although Austrian Airlines (AUA) crews are not joining the walk-out—AUA pilots belong to a different union—the carrier is part of the Lufthansa Group and relies heavily on the group’s German hubs for long-haul and connecting traffic. Speaking to Austrian media, AUA spokesperson Yvonne Wachholder said the airline will deploy larger aircraft on the high-frequency Vienna–Frankfurt and Vienna–Munich routes to soak up displaced passengers and protect key corporate flows.

Mobility managers have been advised to check bookings that include onward Lufthansa segments: if the long-haul leg is cancelled, travellers may be re-routed through Zurich, Brussels or Paris, potentially triggering new EES biometric checks and longer total travel times. The airline is allowing free re-booking within the original ticketed cabin until 18 April.

The strike comes at an awkward moment for Austrian travellers. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) went fully live on 10 April, adding 1–2 minutes of biometric capture for every non-EU passport at Vienna-Schwechat. Companies that rely on tight day-trip schedules now face a double squeeze: labour action in Germany can unravel carefully-timed connections, while the EES roll-out leaves less slack at the border.

“We recommend staff add an extra hour at departure and keep boarding passes for proof of exit in case the 90/180-day counter is disputed,” said Dieter Kaiser, head of mobility at the Austrian Business Travel Association (ABTA).

For travellers unsure about the new documentation rules, visa validity or Schengen stay calculations, VisaHQ’s Vienna-based team can take the guesswork out of trip planning. The online platform (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) lets employees and mobility managers check real-time entry requirements, order express visas and receive alerts about systems like the EES—services that become doubly valuable when re-routing through multiple non-EU hubs at short notice.

For employers, the biggest immediate headache is duty of care. If crews and aircraft are out of position after Tuesday night, some Wednesday morning flights could still be delayed, knocking on to meetings in Brussels, Milan or London. HR teams are updating risk registers and reminding assignees that missed connections may invalidate through-checked baggage and EU261 compensation claims. Travel insurers have confirmed that strike-related delays remain covered provided tickets were purchased before the industrial action was announced.

Looking further ahead, unions on both sides hint that this may not be the last stoppage. VC president Andreas Pinheiro told Austrian Wings that meaningful offers on pensions and pay have yet to materialise. If talks collapse, May and June—the peak period for short-term project travel and overseas assignments—could see rolling 24-hour walk-outs. Multinationals with regional headquarters in Vienna are therefore revisiting contingency plans such as shifting meetings online, booking high-speed rail, or using secondary airports like Linz and Graz for point-to-point links within Central Europe.
